Description

Performance:

Mosaic Silicon Valley will present Mosaic Quartet, a piece that brings together local artists practicing musical disciplines from China, Europe, and India in a stunning example of what America stands to gain if everyone collaborated with and celebrated each culture that has made a home here. The mission of Mosaic Silicon Valley, a Sangam Arts' initiative, is to produce works that highlight the immense diversity of the San Francisco Bay Area, providing an alternative model to "America is a melting pot," by redefining what it means to be American today.

Mosaic Quartet will perform a work composed by Arjun Verma entitled "Dialogues in Suha" - a groundbreaking combination of Chinese, Indian and European instrumentation.

Sitarist  Arjun Verma has emerged as a unique voice—both within the tradition of North Indian Classical Music and through his innovative cross-genre collaborations.  Arjun was trained by maestro Ali Akbar Khan as well as Alam Khan and Roop Verma. He has performed extensively in his 25 year career, including at venues such as United Nations (Geneva), Prague, the Fillmore (San Francisco) and Houston Grand Opera.

Award-winning local pipa virtuoso Shenshen Zhang has been recognized in Asia and America for her exquisite tonal qualities and delicate lyric interpretations. Perhaps best known for performing many of the traditional Chinese pipa repertoires, Shenshen has also participated in landmark premieres of works and recordings by the modern generation of world composers like Tan Dun and Chen Yi, among others.

Nazan Aktas is a musician who is passionate about all aspects of arts/performing arts.  At 14, Nazan picked up the cello and has been studying and performing ever since. She graduated from Sonoma State University with a Bachelor of Music Degree focusing on Classical Performance and Jazz Studies. Currently, she studies at the Ali Akbar College of Music in San Rafael.

Sudhakar Vaidyanathan's journey with music started with vocals, but he was drawn to the tabla. A disciple of Pandit Swapan Chaudhuri, he has accompanied several Indian Classical masters and enjoys forging innovative rhythms on multi-disciplinary stages.
