Cinequest opens in grand fashion as the lights dim, and we present an uproarious comedy from director Don McKellar (Last Night) and screenwriter Michael Dowse (Goon), starring a brilliant cast that includes Brendan Gleeson (“Mad-Eye” Moody from the Harry Potter films), Taylor Kitsch (Friday Night Lights), and Liane Balaban (Supernatural).
A decade after Jean-Francois Pouliot’s La Grande Séduction wowed critics, the brilliantly adapted English remake substitutes the quaint charm of rural Quebec with the rugged beauty of a tiny Newfoundland coastal community.
With the decline of jobs in the fishing industry and their friends and family taking jobs in the big city, the residents of a small village are overjoyed by the prospects that a plastics manufacturer wants to build a factory in their town. A bright future lies ahead for everyone—that is, until the “hammer drops” and they learn the company requires a resident doctor serve the community…something they don’t have. Enter Dr. Lewis (Kitsch), a cosmetic surgeon who has been “banished” to the seaside haven. Hilarity ensues as the community scrambles to charm Lewis to become their permanent doctor by attempting to be a sophisticated, worldly community, rather than the unrefined group they are.
Director Don McKellar has previously had work shown at Cinequest with the 2000 short film Elimination Dance and again in 2012, when he starred in I’m Yours. With his new film, McKellar further reveals his superb talent for creating entertaining stories that bring to life vibrant and colorful characters. Cinequest is so proud to present this year’s Opening Night presentation: The Grand Seduction.
The post-screening celebration at South First Billiards includes cocktails, world-class food by Justin's, and great music.
